FINALIST PROFILE
2021 EQUESTRIAN VICTORIA
GROOM OF THE YEAR FINALIST
ANTHONY BYWATER
SHOW HORSE & DRESSAGE
MEET ANTHONY
Anthony is well known around the show and dressage scene as being ‘worlds best husband/groom/strapper’! From assisting with the ground work when young/unbroken ponies first arrive, to preparing them for competition and everything in between Anthony takes on every task with compassion, pride and professionalism.
Anthony is very much a visual person and will sit back and watch a situation and learn from it. Each young pony that comes through the stables is treated as an individual and Anthony enjoys watching their natural behaviour and responses to their surroundings to then tailor a way to handle them and progress their ground work in such a way that is least stressful and most beneficial for their personality. He’s exceptionally talented with groundwork and the young ponies we get which are often straight out of the paddock, unbroken and had minimal handling!
Anthony also watches professionals at work in their field as inspiration to further broaden his own skill set, in addition he also enjoys watching videos on YouTube to expand his knowledge base. His place on both the EV State Eventing Committee and Tonimbuk Horse Trials Committee keeps him ‘in touch’ and is invaluable as far as exposure and development in a broader sense.
Anthony has large role in young pony groundwork regime including getting them used to new gear/tack, clipping, washing, float loading etc. in addition he is always on the ground with the breakers when ridden for the first few times. Anthony takes a lot of pride in getting the ponies ready for competition, be it showing or dressage. Each pony is cleaned to perfection with immaculate make up (if we are showing that day) and saddled up ready. He’s always there to put the final touches on prior to entering the ring, including providing a ‘few pointers’, taking photos and cheering.
He is known for helping others out and is dedicated and passionate with a drive for excellence in making sure horses in his charge are always cared for like the kings they are at home, so they hit the competition ring looking 110%.
